Contents and Box Cost vs Individual Cost…
Glutamel - White Rolls £3.95
Soul Kitchen - Mushroom Soup £2 // £24 for a pack of 12
Gleefully - Pastry Mix £3.70
Recipe: Roasted Butternut & Sage Pastries
Total: £35.59
Initial impressions are that they are all products I’ve not had before, however some brands I have had before. I’ve had the Glutamel pizza bases which were superb, Nairn’s have been well used brand in this house although I’ve not tried these specific flatbreads before, Proper I’ve had some of their products in the past, and Tenuta Marmorelle is an amazing pasta brand but I’ve not had their paccheri.
I’m very excited to try the Roasted Butternut & Sage Pastries recipe which involves using the Pastry Mix, Stuffing, and Sauerkraut, although I’m expecting this to be messy.
Financially the box contents is a little more than the what I spent, but obviously that isn’t factoring in delivery fees, but for the time and effort put into the box it is great value.
I was contacted by Delishly prior to the box being shipped to ask if I was okay with ‘May Contain Dairy’ products which I know is to cover them, but it felt really nice and personal in the way it came to me over messenger, which gives me that friendly vibe as opposed to a business vibe.
Individual Reviews…
(Disclaimer: This is based on my taste palate and my opinions.)
This granola was quite an experience of mouth feel offering a crunchy and chewy sensation, mixed with the flavour of nuts and fruits which overall came together to make a very delicious breakfast.
Although it didn’t look like a great deal it was quite filling and I did gradually decrease the portions I was giving myself. However I do feel it’s a bit too expensive for the amount of granola you get in the box. I would probably get it again, but it’s not going to be a daily breakfast for me.
I was excited for this after having the Glutamel Pizza Base so I very eagerly got stuck in!
It was very easy to bake these off, simply chucking them in the oven and waiting for about 10 minutes. They came out great with a crunchy exterior while soft and fluffy on the inside. I used my first roll with the mushroom soup and it made for a fantastic lunch!
The spare rolls I put in an airtight container and the next day I made a roll with them which wasn’t very nice, they were quite hard. However toasting them made them very nice again.
The final one I toasted and had with beans on which was really delicious as they soaked up all the flavour.
At £3.95 they are a tad on the expensive side for a gluten free roll. They are nice but unfortunately I do think there are cheaper alternatives out there that last longer and taste better.
This is a dark chocolate bar with a layer of hazelnut butter through the middle of each chunk. The hazelnut is very strong and prominent which is a really lovely addition to the dark chocolate, however does take some of the chocolate flavour away from the bar.
Although this bar is full of flavour it is very expensive for what you get. Personally I won’t be buying any Hu at this price, perhaps at £2 a bar I would consider it. There are much more affordable and just as tasty options out there.
I was quite excited by this as I’ve tried Nairn’s flatbreads before and for a while they were my go to as they were full of flavour and allowed me to be quite flexible with my choices. However when I tried the first flatbread without anything in it I got no flavour from it at all which really surprised me. I was expecting a bit more salt to it and was met with nothing which wasn’t great.
In the end I used some ham and turned it into a sandwhich of sorts, but it offered no complexity to it, just a bit of a crunch.
Personally I wouldn’t buy these again, I will continue to buy their other products, in particular their rosemary and thyme flatbreads are delicious! But, yeah these left me really unimpressed and if I’d not had any of their other products in the past it would have left a dull taste in my mouth about all Nairn products.
At £2.10 a bag and with the Proper name I expected more from it but it honestly felt like they’d forgotten to add any salt or sweetness to it - there was no flavour.
To do a comparison I ordered in the Sainsbury’s Sweet & Salty popcorn which had so much more flavour to it and was 99p for an extra 20grams.
As expected from Tenuta Marmorelle the pasta was fantastic and maintained it’s shape and consistency throughout the cook period, no falling apart at all. The pasta had a meaty chew to it which I really like about it, and the shape was so much fun, Min and I spent the meal pushing our bolognaise into the pasta and eating each tube filled.
I do feel that the pasta is extremely expensive for what it is, almost ten times the price of Sainsbury’s gluten free pasta, but that makes it such a treat when it does turn up in a box. If it was around the £4.50 mark for 500g then I would replace my daily pasta, until then, it’s for special meals.
This was extremely easy to make and filled a mug very well. Initially the soup came out quite clumpy but after breaking down some of the clumps and giving it a good mix they went away.
It was a very tasty soup and even if I hadn’t read the packet it was most definitely a mushroom flavoured soup - however - £2 for a powdered soup is a bit expensive in my opinion.
The pastry was extremely easy to make and worked really well as a pastry.
I somewhat impulsively tried to make some bacon turnovers which ideally should have been done with puff pastry, but this worked.
The pastry itself was good, it had a nice savoury pastry flavour to it which would have worked much better as a pie top or base.
For £3.70 you got a decent amount of pastry in the pack, it would be cheaper to make your own but from a convenience standpoint it’s a good mix that works.
This was extremely easy to make with very minimal effort required, however, stuffing is very easy to make from scratch with very minimal effort required.
This kind was sage and red onion although, like previous Gordon Rhode’s products I’ve tried, it had no flavour at all and may well have been breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and water.
In a pinch it’s a great product for some stuffing, but if you’re going to all the effort of making saying a roast, it doesn’t take much more effort to make your own stuffing with a lot more flavour and at a much cheaper price point.
What a lovely colour? This was my first experience with sauerkraut so I wasn’t sure what to expect from it.
On it’s own it was quite chewy with a vinegar taste to it, it wasn’t the tastiest of experiences and I didn’t get much of a beetroot flavour.
However when combined with the sausages I’d grilled it added an extra layer of complexity to the mouthfeel and taste which I really quite enjoyed.
Would I buy it again? Maybe… I’m uncertain about it, but I’m open to trying more sauerkraut in the future.
Final Opinions…
I enjoyed the October box of Delishly and found it offered a nice variety of different types of products; sweet, savoury, snacky, products to cook with which is great and the box kept me experimenting throughout the month.
I do find, and am finding, not just with this box but all boxes that gluten free products do suffer from having a huge mark-up, this isn’t a fault of Delishly but the companies that create these products.
I love the Tenuta Marmorelle that came in this box, the pasta was sublime as usual and so much fun for the meal! I especially like this box as it had me experimenting with my weekly meal plan.
