Mean Girls @ The Savoy Theatre, London

Many, many moons ago I watched the Mean Girls movie, I don’t recall much of it but I think I enjoyed it?

A month or so back my child went to watch the Mean Girls performance at the Savoy Theatre with their Mum; they thoroughly enjoyed it and wanted to go back and watch it with me. As the show was coming to a close I booked us up some tickets and a room as they wanted to do Stage Door.

So, on the 23rd of May we took a train up to London, this time staying in Blackfriars, a place that my child hasn’t been to before, they seem to have it in their head that they know all of London because of their time spent around Covent Garden/Holborn. We took a stroll along the Thames so they could see some new sights like The Globe Theatre, a closer inspection of St Paul’s, which they had no interest in, however the distant Bank/Aldgate skyscrapers were of huge interest to them. It was a nice couple of hours strolling around and I felt it was good for them to see more.

In the evening we started heading East along the Thames, this introduced them to the Thames Beach which amazed them, as well as a bunch of market sheds which they really liked. We went over Waterloo Bridge, a familiar bridge to them and passed the last remaining sewer gas destructor lamp, before venturing into The Savoy Theatre, which was a lovely little theatre but we ended up arriving really early so had to hang around for a bit.

The show itself was really fun and a great experience that I am grateful my child dragged me up there to see, as this sort of show wasn’t on my rader at all. The songs were strong and powerful, backed up by some stunning stage performances and choreography. After the show we went to stage door and met some of the cast, grabbing their autographs which had my child buzzing with excitement on the walk back to the hotel.

It was lovely walking through London along the Thames at night with my child considering how coming to London was such a big ordeal a few years back, their anxiety would spike and their senses would overload leaving them non-verbal, stuck in fight, flight, or freeze states of mind. Every trip had been up for medical reasons, but this was the first time we were up here purely for fun, and as we walked through the night they told me how they really liked London at night and it is a place they would want to live in. Walking past the lit Thames Beach they said that this was a place they would like to sit and enjoy the quiet with all the lights and sights. It gave me a happy feeling, content, and this feeling that all the obstacles of the past were in the past and that my child was becoming a little more capable.
