First Impressions

The bottle is an iconic shape to the Kraken rums with the finger grips either side which makes pouring easy.

The label is the usual Kraken design but shaded in a sepia to resemble coffee, it’s clear and has all the details at hand.

The initial scene of the smell is a fantasticly strong smell of coffee, it’s like walking into a coffee shop - if you like the smell of coffee, you’re going to love sniffing this!

The Tasting…

Neat

With the fresh smell of coffee from the scent in my nostrils I was very hopeful for this drink, although I’d been let down by the scent of a drink in the past. However in this instance the scent is what you taste; it was amazing! You’re hit by a strong flavour of coffee with the mix of a sweet rum making this taste very much like a decent tiramisu - however it’s not a drink I could drink a lot of!

The liquid itself is dark like a coffee and black spiced rum mixed together (obviously) and has a very smooth mouth feel.

Initial thoughts on drinking this neat was that this would work really well as a base to an espresso martini (to be fair, it’s not far off being one without the mixing). Also, Min commented on how it would be great over ice cream affogato style.

Rum & Cola (Karma Cola)

I was dubious about mixing the two as this rum is amazing neat but surprisingly it tasted really nice. There was a very strong coffee after taste that came with this mix (which I loved) but Min and I both agreed that it had the smell of Guinness and tasted like a very sweet stout.

The Karma Cola diluted some of the richness of the rum and made it much better for a long drink, something I could probably drink a few of without it being too sickly sweet.

Dark & Stormy (Karma Gingerella [aff])

This turned into a fantastic shade after adding some ginger ale to it.

The flavoured became quite interesting having this light coffee flavour but also with woody and caramel like notes to it which was a very pleasant surprise.

With the addition of the Karma Ginger Ale it brought down a lot of the sweetness and the richness which made it a drink that could be drank a lot more.

Overall…

This rum is a staple Kraken rum with all it’s delicious notes, but with the added delight of coffee which if you’re a coffee lover like me, is a fantastic addition!

I was dubious about mixing this drink with cola and ginger ale but I was pleasantly surprised by how these changed the flavours in a good way, adding some additional complexity to the flavour of the drink.

This is a fantastic drink and I would be happy to buy it full price, however am very happy to have got it at a discount!
